Attention Test-Takers: An Extensive Change is Coming to the TOEFL iBT in 2026!

If you are planning to take the TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) in the near future, there is a critical date. January 21, 2026.

Starting on this date, the TOEFL test will be very different from the TOEFL Test that is offered. This isn’t a small tweak—it’s a major transformation that will render most of your current study materials obsolete.

Why You Need to Act Now or Change Course

For those aiming to test after the start of 2026, the shift poses a huge challenge. The new format includes an adaptive design, a new 1-6 scoring scale (alongside the old 0-120 scale for a transition period), and entirely new question types in every section (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing).

The main problem? Your current and past TOEFL resources (books, practice tests, and instructional videos) will not prepare you for this new reality. Studying from these sources puts you at a significant disadvantage, as they won’t match the new adaptive format, task types (like “Write an Email” or the “Take an Interview” speaking task), or scoring system.

Simply put, the teaching community and publishers are struggling to keep up with the frequency of changes (2019, 2023, and now 2026), leaving test-takers with a major gap in effective, up-to-date study materials.

Considering an Alternative? Meet IELTS.

If you cannot confidently take the TOEFL before December 31, 2025, or if you’re looking for a more stable preparation path, we strongly recommend shifting your focus to the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

IELTS offers several compelling advantages for international students:

  • Equal Acceptance: IELTS scores are as widely accepted as TOEFL for admissions into thousands of schools and institutions globally.
  • Stability is Key: The IELTS test format has remained largely consistent over the past decade. This means the abundance of high-quality, available study resources (books, practice tests, etc.) remain relevant and useful for your preparation.
  • Authentic Speaking Assessment: IELTS uses a live, in-person interview to test your speaking ability. Many students find this one-on-one conversation a more natural and effective way to demonstrate their English fluency than the computer-recorded speaking of the TOEFL.
  • Cost-Effective: In many regions, the IELTS test is less expensive than the TOEFL.

Your Next Step: Focus on Core Skills

Whether you decide to race the clock and take the current TOEFL or pivot to IELTS, one thing remains constant: the importance of your core English skills.

To help students navigate this uncertain landscape, Manhattan Language is launching a new University Test Preparation class designed to develop fundamental proficiency in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. While these skills are universally applicable, the instruction and practice in this course will be specifically oriented towards IELTS and Duolingo preparation, offering you a more stable and well-resourced path to test-day success.
